How to photograph your catalogue with a phone

A window, a sheet of paper and one rule about what a phone cannot do.

Photograph illustrating: How to photograph your catalogue with a phone

Most of the catalogues I am asked to fix do not need a camera. They need a window and somebody willing to shoot the same object nine times.

The paper trick

A sheet of white paper held opposite the window fills the shadow side. That is the entire lighting setup for a product under thirty centimetres, and it is the difference between a photograph that looks taken and one that looks found.

What a phone cannot do

It cannot separate a dark object from a dark background, and it cannot hold detail in a metal highlight. If your product is black, or shiny, or both, hire someone. That paragraph has saved my clients more money than the rest of the guide.
